Introduction to Hannah:)

Hello, my name is Hannah Hoffman. I am a Psychology and Religious Studies major at OU. I am often asked what I intend to do with that combination of majors and I never really know how to answer that question. I find both subjects really interesting and enjoy trying to understand why people think the things they do and what people value. I am graduating in the spring and only a little nervous about the lack of plans and career goals I still have at this point.
I spent my summer working at a summer camp in Navasota which I noted was my favorite place in my earlier blogpost. I enjoyed getting to serve the Lord in the middle of nowhere with some of my favorite people for 12 weeks. I am a little sad summer is over but I am happy to be back in Norman.
I am from Houston, Texas originally. I am a big fan of the Houston Astros. Baseball is my second favorite sport behind softball. Alex Bregman is my favorite baseball player. I went to an Astros game this summer and got his autograph and went back to camp super excited. That may have been the highlight of my summer.
I enjoy singing, playing guitar, watching TV, reading and playing with my dog, Meeko, in my spare time. My dog is named after the raccoon in my favorite movie, Pocahontas. She is an Australian Shepherd with lots and lots of energy. My favorite TV show is New Girl and my favorite book is Love Does by Bob Goff (highly recommend it to anyone who has time to read it). My favorite food is lasagna or any type of pasta to be honest. Italian food is just the best.
I am excited for this class and learning new things this semester!

  1. Oh, psychology and religious studies are such great majors for resonating with this class, Hannah! Some of the most important approaches to mythology are grounded in psychology, and of course mythology is very much at the heart of religion and the stories that people tell as part of their religious traditions. Wonderful! And your Meeko is such a cutie; Australian Shepherds are such great dogs. I don't have a dog but I've always thought it I were to have one I'd like an Australian Shepherd or an Australian Cattle Dog (I used to work in a Humane Society, and those were my favorite dogs of all the different dog breeds I got to see).
And I had forgotten about that raccoon in Pocahontas, but I have been reading raccoon stories all summer long as part of a research project I've been doing on African American and Native American folktales. Maybe you will want to do a raccoon project for this class... nobody has ever done that a raccoon story project before, but of course it is one of the great American animals! If you are curious, here's a link to all the Brer Rabbit stories in which Brer Raccoon makes an appearance: Raccoons in the Brer Rabbit stories(as collected and retold by Joel Chandler Harris). Of course with your interests in psychology and religious studies, I am sure you will find all kinds of topics of interest in this class, and I am curious to see which way you will decide to go with your reading and writing! :-)

  2. Hi Hannah! I am also a psychology major, but instead of in combination with religious studies, I am doing it in combination with nutrition. I think combining religious studies with psychology will be a very interesting route to take. I am in an abnormal psychology class right now, and we just talked today about how there is such an interesting link between the two such as the topics of hallucinations, divine intervention, etc. My teacher is a counselor at a mental health clinic, and she said they just got a new person hired who specializes in divinity, which I thought was very interesting!

  3. Hi Hannah,

    Nice to “meet” you!

How long hav you been playing guitar? Do you have a favorite genre/thing to play/people to play with?

It will be interesting to see how you bring to bear your experience in Psychology and Religious Studies in this class; like Laura said, it’s a very relevant and central piece of background for everything we’re doing.

    Best,
    A.M.

  4. Hey Hannah, sounds like you're a busy lady! I heavily considered going into psychology as well, but I found that professional writing in way more in my wheelhouse. It's great that you get to take Mythology and Folklore because the myths and stories that have circled humanity for millennia provide fantastic insight into the human experience. Hope you have fun in this class!

  5. Hi Hannah!

I think the combination of Psychology and Religion is awesome. Religion and spirituality are big factors in life decisions for many people, and often their faith is what helps keep them mentally strong. I'm a social work major, so I have learned what a big role religion can play in a person's life. I am also a baseball lover, however, my team is the Texas Rangers. I used to play softball when I was younger, and I loved it. Baseball and softball will forever be my favorite sports! Aussies are gorgeous dogs, and one day I really hope to have my own Aussie! Your Meeko is freaking adorable.

  6. Hi Hannah! I totally get where you're coming from... I'm Pre-Med but I also have an International Studies degree. People always ask what I'm going to do with it and honestly I just find the classes fascinating. I've gotta say though, I am from Dallas so I can't say I'm the biggest Astros fan in the world. I do think Alex Bregman is a fantastic player, however. I look forward to reading your stories!

  7. Hey Hannah. Your dog is so cute! I have quite a few dogs at home myself- 4 to be exact! One of my dogs is a golden retriever / English shepherd mix, and she looks quite a bit like an Aussie! As far as your majors go, I think that's a cool combination, and I'm glad you're happy where you are! It's okay if you don't have career plans yet, you have time! As long as you're doing what you love, it's worth it, right? I look forward to reading more of your posts in class!

  8. Hi Hannah,

Your dog is so adorable! I am a psych major also, but I am Pre-OT. I think that no matter what, having a double major will make you look good to a lot of employers. Psych and Religious Studies could open up some interesting research too. Don't worry about not knowing what you are going to do. I thought I knew exactly what I was going to do with my life and last semester, I changed my mind! It pushed back graduation for a semester. I look forward to reading your stories!

  9. Hi Hannah! Firstly, your dog is so cute! I think your combination of both psychology and religious studies majors is so interesting. And I totally understand how you feel when people ask what you're going to do with that. I'm a psychology major as well and I've jumped from pre-med to pre-pa to now just psychology so it's always hard to answer when you don't have a solid plan. However, don't worry too much about that! I think you'll have an epiphany one day about what you want to do and you'll figure it out. Also, I love New Girl! I binge-watched it when I first started watching it. Who's your favorite character? I love Winston and his weirdness. I look forward to reading more of your stories this semester!

  10. Hi Hannah!
I feel like psychology and religious studies are related in unique ways that people often don't notice at first. I am very interested in both tops, and I have always wanted to take an intro class to religious studies. Maybe, I will look into that for my other upper level humanity requirement. I have family in the Woodlands, TX near Houston. I love visiting that area, and that is so cool that you branched out and travelled so far for college. Finally, and possibly most important, your dog is SO CUTE!

  11. Hi Hannah,

That's cool that you're a psychology major. As you know from my introduction post I'm really interested in personality types and cognitive functions so I'm also really into figuring out why people are the way they are. I was like you before and didn't really have clear career plans until I put a lot of thought into it. Try to think about what all your hobbies and what excites you have in common and maybe that will help.

  12. Hannah,

I think it is great that you decided to stick with the studies you are interested in, despite the "norm" that they may not go together well. I also love singing, and think music is such a special way to connect with yourself and others as well. Your dog is fantastic, it for sure makes me miss my animals back home! Excited to read your work this semester.

  13. Hannah,
I have worked at a Christian summer camp in Arkansas over the past two summers and it has completely changed my life. I love getting to spend my summers doing something that will matter forever, and building relationships that will last a lifetime! I think it's awesome that you are studying religious studies, maybe you could open a summer camp someday?

  14. Hey Hannah! Those two majors are such an interesting combination, but I can definitely see how you would be interested in both and how they can be similar in certain ways! I am actually in a Christian sorority here at OU so working summer camps and going on retreats is such an exciting thing for me too! Being disconnected from the world and focusing on faith for even a few days is so refreshing. Your dog is absolutely adorable and I love the inspiration behind her name! I hope you have a great semester, nice to meet you!

  15. Hello Hannah! I don't think I've met someone at OU with a minor in Religious Studies yet so it's cool to see that you have that background. Your dog is so adorable and she makes me miss my own dog back home. I love that you're a fellow pasta aficionado--I'm eating some as I type this. I hope you've been having a great semester so far!

  16. Hi Hannah,
Meeko is so precious and looks like a sweetheart, please post more pictures of him in the future! I think it's amazing you're studying two different subjects you're passionate about. I've only taken the introduction courses to Religious Studies and Psychology. I enjoyed religious studies a little bit more because the topic taught me so much during that semester. I also love Italian food, especially pasta of any sort, it's the best! I hope the semester has been treating you well, and it continues to!

  17. Hi Hannah! I really enjoyed reading this intro! It is super cool that you chose two majors based on your passion for the subjects. When it comes to school and thinking about your future career, it is super important to choose a path that excites you, so I am glad that is what you chose to do! Also, I loved the picture of your dog. So precious!! Thanks for sharing!

  18. Hey there Hannah! It is great to see that you are taking this course online. It is always interesting to me when I encounter people in both online and traditional classes. I think it is funny how there are some ways in which you actually get to know someone better in a nontraditional setting, as opposed to in person. Your dog is absolutely adorable and I love the backstory on how you named him. I really appreciate a meaningful pet name. Good luck this semester!

  19. Hi Hannah! It is nice to get to know you a little through your introduction before I start to read some of your stories! Psychology and Religious Studies is an interesting combination, but I think they work well together. I considered taking a class about religion in the Anthropology department, but my schedule didn't work out. I wanted to take it because I wanted to learn more about other religions. Growing up in rural Oklahoma, I only encountered Christianity. I wonder if you will use some of your religious knowledge in your stories! Can't wait to read them.

  20. Hey Hannah!
I am also a Psych major here at OU! I like that you are also into religious studies, the best class I have taken here at OU has hands down been Religion in Everyday life, so I also share that interest with you! Your dog is so so so CUTE! Last year I was really close to buying an actual raccoon and naming him Meeko, I love that name, and the character it comes from. We actually have a lot in common! I have enjoyed the stories so far I have read from you and can't wait to read more!

  21. Hi Hannah, it's awesome that you're graduating in spring! You know, it can seem daunting at first to not really be sure what you want to do, but, I think if you embrace it, it can be a really exciting and fun time! Your dog is really cute! I'm not a big fan of Houston traffic but Houston is cool. Anyways, I hope you have fun this semester! I look forward to reading your stories!

  22. Hey Hannah!
I think psychology and religious studies actually sound like very compatible majors. Religion is such an important part of the psyche for many people in determining how they approach interactions and act according to their values. My roommate is also obsessed with New Girl, and every time I catch a glimpse of an episode it seems like a really fun show! I'm a huge fan of Italian food as well, with gnocchi probably being my own personal favorite pasta variety.

  23. Hey Hannah! I really enjoyed learning about what made you want to follow a career path in psychology and religious studies. I think that while those are the two overarching ways of thinking, there are so many intricate ideologies within them and they're intertwined more than we think. I am also graduating in the spring; crazy to think how quickly the time has gone! Hopefully we both figure out what to do with our lives soon!

  24. Hey Hannah! It is nice to meet you via online. I really enjoyed your introduction post. That is really awesome to hear that you served in Navasota this summer. Mission trips and camps have been a long time favorite of mine. I also love getting to see the Lord work in ways I could’ve never imagined in places I would’ve never guessed. I also love new girl! I hope your semester is going great!

  25. Hey Hannah!

It was really good getting to read a little bit about you. I love your dog! Australian shepherds are so sweet, and I have loved every one I have gotten to meet. I hope everything goes well this semester, and I can't wait to read your stories.

  26. Hello, Hannah! As a Dallasite, it’s nice to meet another Texan in this class! I hope this semester has been treating you well. It’s common to be nervous about life after college (I’m worried about that myself), though I know if you follow your instincts, everything will turn out alright. Anyhow, I’m excited to see how Mythology and Folklore has inspired you, and I can’t wait to read your stories!

  27. Hi Hannah!

I'm also graduating in May, and have no career plans.... So you're not alone! But we have plenty of time to figure it out! Meeko is so cute! I love that you named him after the raccoon in Pocahontas. Very fitting for a high energy dog like him. I'm also a big Italian food and New Girl fan. Winston and Ferguson are my favorite duo!

  28. Hey Hannah!
Your major seems like it is very interesting! I think combining both of them is so great. I love dogs and I think that is so adorable that you named yours Meeko. I was born in Lewisville, so I am a fellow Texan as well. I would have to say my favorite team is the Yankees because that was what my dad raised me on ha. Camp time sounds very fun and interesting for sure and I am glad you enjoy it. I hope the rest of your semester goes well!
